Color Clay – Geotherapy, mud therapy, clay treatments…

Geotherapy, mud therapy, clay treatments… these names can be summed up in one sentence:

“The Earth is the mysterious laboratory of life” Dr. Manuel Lazaeta Acharan

There is evidence of mud therapy or clay treatments in antiquity. Countless generations of people living by lagoons, seas and volcanoes have used natural sediments for both aesthetic and medicinal purposes.

  • 5,000 years ago, the Egyptians used mud from the banks of the Nile against inflammation and rheumatism.
  • Due to its antiseptic properties, clay was used for embalming in mummification of the body.
  • The Greeks used bandages with a thick layer of clay to treat fractures.
  • The famous Hippocrates used mud to relieve abdominal pain and inflammation in rheumatism.

Clays today “From hot springs to modern SPAs”

It is interesting that nowadays, with the latest discoveries in medicine and the cosmetic industry, we are in the midst of a revival of alternative therapies that use natural elements such as healing waters, seaweed, mud, clay… This is a clear return to our origins, to the benefits of the elements that nature provides us – a return to nature and the knowledge of our ancestors.

Clay is a sedimentary rock that is formed by the decomposition of feldspars due to chemical and atmospheric erosion. A mixture of different clay materials can be found in a single rock. One of the main characteristics of clay is its elementary particle size below 2 microns. From a chemical point of view, clays are basically hydrated aluminum silicates, of the phyllosilicate type. The properties of clays are a consequence of their structures.

Commercial clays for cosmetics and other therapeutic uses are extracted from uncontaminated soil, then exposed to the open air to dry. They are later purified, refined, and ground to particle sizes below 40 microns.

Minerals & skin

Clays contain all the minerals our skin needs and some of them are absorbed

Silicon – It is important for tissue restructuring, preventing flaccidity and improving muscle tone. It is necessary for collagen synthesis. Lack of this element creates stretch marks and loss of tissue elasticity, wrinkles and accelerates aging.

Sodium – It is very important for proper cell growth and osmotic pressure regulation.

Magnesium – Necessary for the proper functioning of enzymes that control skin metabolism. It also has anti-inflammatory effects.

Calcium – It is essential for nail and skin metabolism.

Potassium – Gives elasticity and flexibility to the skin and helps increase defense levels.

Iron – Affects melanin synthesis and works in the transport of oxygen in the blood.

Zinc – Used for skin tissue regeneration. It helps in the synthesis of collagen and elastin, and improves the strength and elasticity of the skin. It is the basis for proper cell growth. Its deficiency can cause alopecia, dermatitis and inflammatory processes.

Peeling effect

Clay removes dead cells, toxins and impurities, normalizes skin texture. This effect helps cell proliferation thanks to better oxygenation. Due to their exfoliating effect on the stratum corneum, they facilitate the absorption of other active substances from the product.

Purifying effect

Clays help remove toxins and purify the skin. Their high absorption power helps remove all excess oil on the surface of the skin. Clay can really help us in the fight against fungus and acne due to its antimicrobial effect and astringent power. It deeply cleanses the skin, giving it a natural glow, health and preventing skin moisture loss and the appearance of flaky skin.

Nutritional effect

In the chemical composition of clay, we find mineral salts and trace elements that are necessary for the skin. The diffusion of some of these elements in the skin leads to the activation of metabolic functions. By revitalizing biological processes, it improves the general aspects of the skin, strengthening tissues and reducing wrinkles.

Color Clay

High absorption power – particle size< 44 microns. Occlusive effect – when they are mixed with water and applied to the skin, the temperature rises, opening the pores and excellent penetration of minerals into the skin.
