It’s time for new, better and natural alternatives to Vaseline

What is Vaseline?

INCI: petrolatum

Vaseline is a by-product of petroleum refining. With a melting point close to body temperature, Vaseline softens upon application and forms a waterproof barrier around the applied area, effectively preventing the evaporation of natural moisture from the skin and protecting against foreign particles or microorganisms that can cause infection. Vaseline is an odorless and colorless fat with an exceptionally long shelf life. These characteristics make it a popular ingredient in skin care products and cosmetics.

When properly refined, petroleum jelly poses no known health risks. However, if there is no complete refining history, petroleum jelly could potentially be contaminated with polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). PAHs are byproducts of the combustion of organic material that are often stored in fats due to their lipophilic properties. There is no way to confirm proper refining unless a complete history of the refining process is provided.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs)

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are a group of organic compounds consisting of at least two fused aromatic (benzene) rings. These compounds are formed as byproducts of the incomplete combustion of organic material, including oil, coal, wood, garbage, and other carbon-rich substances. PAHs are present in air, water, soil, and food, and are known for their potentially toxic effects on human health.

PAHs are formed through processes such as:

  • Industrial combustion (e.g. oil refining, electricity generation).
  • Burning wood or coal in households.
  • Vehicle exhaust gases.
  • Cigarette smoke.
  • Preparing food at high temperatures, such as grilling or frying.
  • Natural processes, such as volcanic eruptions and fires.

Presence in cosmetics

In the cosmetics industry, PAHs can be present as contaminants in petroleum-derived ingredients, such as petrolatum and mineral oils, if these ingredients are not properly refined. PAHs are lipophilic, meaning they easily accumulate in fat, including the lipophilic components of skin care products.

PAHs are associated with a number of health risks, including carcinogenicity: many PAHs are classified as carcinogenic by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC). Long-term exposure may increase the risk of cancer, particularly skin, lung and bladder cancer.

Cosmetic ingredients should be certified to meet safety standards, such as those of the European Union, which limits the content of PAHs in products. Manufacturers must conduct rigorous tests to ensure that products do not contain these toxic substances.

Understanding PAHs and their risks is essential for the development of safer and better quality cosmetic products.

What do the market and consumers say?

Criticisms and concerns of the profession

  • Origin and sustainability
Vaseline is a by-product of the petroleum industry, making it unsustainable from an environmental perspective. Environmental concerns have fueled the search for natural alternatives.
  • Pore closing and apparent hydration
Although petroleum jelly effectively retains moisture, dermatologists note that it does not provide active hydration because it does not add moisture to the skin, but only prevents its loss. For oily and acne-prone skin, its occlusive properties can potentially worsen the condition.
  • “Clean beauty” trends
Experts in the industry point to a growing trend towards natural, herbal and “clean beauty” products, where petroleum jelly is losing popularity due to its synthetic origin.
  • Consumer perception
Although safe, some consumers avoid petroleum jelly due to the misperception that it is toxic or does not fit into sustainable beauty, which can lead to negative connotations about the product itself.
