Yerba Santa

Eriodictyon californicum, also known as yerba santa, mountain balsam, bear weed or gumi bush, is an evergreen aromatic shrub belonging to the plant family Boraginaceae. Yerba santa usually grows in clonal stands, about one meter high.
The oblong lanceolate leaves are dark green, leathery and covered in a shiny resin, and the flowers are white to light purple and bell-shaped.
Native to California and Oregon, the yerba santa plant was considered a “sacred plant” by native people. True to this nickname, it has a long history of use in traditional medicine not only to treat asthma and respiratory infections, but also wounds, broken bones, and the like.
Moreover, recent research has identified one of the main flavonoids of yerba santa, sterubin, as a neuroprotective agent against the multiple toxic effects of brain aging. Thus, the efficacy of an extract prepared from the aerial parts of yerba santa to protect hair follicles against oxidative stress was tested in vitro and in vivo as described below.
