Natural alpha-bisabolol, also known as levomenol, can be obtained by direct distillation of the oil of the tropical plant candeia. This shrub, scientifically known as Vanillosmopsis erythropappa, belongs to the Asteraceae family and grows in the southeastern and central regions of Brazil. This shrub produces white, hard, resinous wood, and its leaves, flowers, and oil have medicinal properties.
Natural alpha-bisabolol is also the main ingredient in German chamomile [Chamomilla Recutita (Matricaria) flower oil], which has been used in traditional European medicine for hundreds of years. Chamomile essential oil contains up to 50% 1-alpha-bisabolol.

Bisabolol is a colorless to slightly yellowish liquid with a mild characteristic floral woody odor. It contains at least 95% (-)-1-alpha-bisabolol, a monocyclic unsaturated sesquiterpene alcohol. Alpha-bisabolol, which is neither toxic nor irritating to the skin, exhibits anti-inflammatory and wound healing properties, as well as antifungal and antibacterial effects. In particular, it is a potent inhibitor of fungi, Candida albicans and gram-positive bacteria.
It is suitable for use in skin care products where manufacturers want to take advantage of its anti-inflammatory, bactericidal and antifungal properties, which make it a desirable active ingredient for protecting the skin from various stressors, including in cleansing, shaving, depilatory and sun exposure products. When used in small amounts, bisabolol is active, safe and compatible with the skin.
Bisabolol is well absorbed after dermal application, and manufacturers should be aware of the potential of bisabolol to increase the penetration of other ingredients in cosmetic formulations.
