Witch hazel is a plant extract of Hamamelis virginiana that provides astringent, anti-inflammatory and antibacterial effects in oily skin care, aftershave, hair care and as a skin tonic. Witch hazel contains high amounts of tannins. These have a drying, astringent effect, causing proteins in the skin and on the surface of scratches to tighten. This creates a protective layer that increases resistance to inflammation and promotes healing of damaged skin.

Witch hazel is a very useful herb for inflamed and sensitive skin conditions, such as eczema. It is mainly used when the skin is not significantly damaged and helps protect the affected area and prevent infection. Witch hazel is valuable for damaged facial veins, varicose veins and hemorrhoids and is effective for bruises.
